Huzzah I say!! For I have been inspired. Almost two weekends ago I was lucky enough to attend the inaugural Canadian National Steampunk Exhibition, an incredible three day event featuring merchants, performers and the biggest crowd of dedicated Steampunk cosplayers I have ever seen with my own two eyes. There was just so much to take in that I think it's taken until just now for it to truly sink in what I have been inspired to do. Create a new Steampunk persona, one who will appear first in illustration and then later in actual costume.
You see, for some time now there has been a very popular figure in the Toronto Steampunk scene, a gentleman named Dr. Holocaust who has wowed convention goers since 2007 and more recently has entertained fans the world over with his highly successful War Front series on YouTube. He's been so successful that several would be challengers have come out of the woodwork, including one Professor Skull who triumphed over Holocaust in the evil laugh competition at the Canadian National Steampunk Exhibition. This rivalry is only going to fuel months and months of convention appearances, staged fights and good natured videos of these villains zinging each other comically.
My hopes is to one day be a part of this faux rivalry of villains vying to rule over the Toronto Steampunk world, which shall begin with my new persona. He will not be a scientist however like Skull or Holocaust, but a rogue. Yes, a Steampunk rogue. I have so many ideas in my head for what this fellow could look like, and a rough outline of how it should all come together.
So stay tuned in the coming days for the big reveal of my new Steampunk persona, the rogue named Aurek. Take care and stay out of trouble until then!

A New Fresh Batch
Well then, I've put off posting any artwork for a while now as my dreaded nemesis known as "The Real World" overtook me once again:). The truth is I haven't had the opportunity to even work on new projects as of late, or any projects that really provided me with the opportunity to push my skills and or learn new ones.
My lovely wife though suggested that I use this chance to post some of my prior work that I've done over the years. I was hesitant at first, but I came to realize it was a good idea to at least get some more of my work seen and opened up to constructive feedback. All and all I posted seven pieces that stretch between a few week
A Tribute to Those Nervous Minutes
I decided to indeed go back to a Polynesian themed illustration for my next piece, the newly posted "Jitters Before the Finals". This piece touches on something I've been able to mention to a few other artists and photographers here on DA, namely how big a fan I am of images that capture what happens behind the scene. Images of photographers taking light readings, models checking their Blackberry's and so on, or in this case a Polynesian dancer at a competition waiting out the last few awkward minutes before she takes to the stage.
I also attempted using a style from the Canadian animated TV show "Stoked", which is a departure from the somew
She's Running on Sunshine at Last!
At long last I have completed my first deviation of the year 2011, and I am for the most part happy with how it turned out. I know where I want to be in my skills as an artist, and I know I am at least three to four years away from being there. So for now, knowing where I am and what I CAN do, I am happy with how this turned out.
I'm very happy with how the sun glare effect turned out on the model, an idea I borrowed from SquirrelShaver's amazing Grimm Myths piece. I'm also pleased with how the hair turned out on the model, for which I used the amazing "Hair Tutorial" by liiga. Both of these individuals are artists I have only the upmost res
Another Vector Project Begins
I have decided that now is the time to start on a new vector art project. I believe I'll try to take this one in the direction of "Mile High Polynesian", which to date has been my best reviewed piece. I'm imagining the image of a woman running down a shoreline set against a setting sun, it's the sort of image I think will really catch people's eye in a positive way and challenge me to learn a few of the amazing skills I've seen demonstrated by other vector artists here on DA.
As for when this will be finished, well I've already started on drawing the woman in the image, but with work and other project commitments, I'd be looking at some time
